Here's a breakdown on each group and their purpose:
Root - This is the top-level administrative group. Members of this group have full administrative access over the forums at CSSBoards.com, as well as our game and voice servers.
Admin - This is the highest level group a moderator can achieve. Members of the "Admin" group are basically supervisors to all moderators on CSSBoards.com, and also have full administrative access to all game and voice servers.
Moderator II - Level 2 Moderators have the ability to modify/delete forum posts and member accounts, sitewide throughout CSSBoards.com. They also have full administrative access to game and voice servers.
Moderator I - Level 1 Moderators have administrative control over one forum area of CSSBoards.com. Membership in this group is basically a prerequisite for entry into the higher level moderation groups.
Server Admin - Game Server Admins are members who have access to administrative functions on DFO game and voice servers. Members of this group also have access to private staff forums on CSSBoards.com.
Distinguished - Distinguished members are users who take an active part in our community and demonstrate sense and character. Members in this group are usually approached first when a Moderator or Game Server Admin position opens up.
Member - When you first register with CSSBoards.com, you are added to this group by default. Members are able to add/edit posts on our website and can access the secured "Downloads" area of the site.
Guest - Guests are visitors to CSSBoards.com who have not yet registered, or are not logged in. Guests can view topics but cannot add/edit threads, search the forum, or access the download areas.
Banned - Self-explanatory group. Not a very "fun" one to be in.

I will be adding some very cool graphics for these groups that will display beneath your username when you post. It will take some time to get them setup however because I have to edit the core forum code to achieve those results. Here's a little taste of one of the group badges to come though, this one is for the Game Server Admin:
